Aim
A double checking procedure (two nurses checking that the correct medications are given to patients) is traditionally believed to reduce the chances of making errors and thus improve patient safety. Although double checking medications prior to administration is a feature of everyday clinical practice, it is not supported by sound empirical evidence and there are conflicting opinions about its efficacy. Research findings from studies on the efficacy of single checking (one nurse checking that the correct medication is given) advocate for this method of medication administration in preference to double checking.
Aim:
Implement the Single Check Medication project in pilot areas and evaluate results.
