Western Health is participating in an on-site snapshot audit of all IV infusions running through BD Alaris pumps in our nominated areas across all our sites over approximately a 2-3 week period starting on Tuesday 20 June 2023.

The audits will support our infusion pump Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) data analysis and provide evidence for accreditation. Audit results can be used to conduct targeted education and guide pump dataset improvements, and if undertaken regularly can demonstrate clinical practice improvement over time and increased patient safety.

What protections are in place for patient and staff safety and confidentiality?

  • BD staff do not record or actively seek any patient or staff details. BD staff do not see patient details unless they are listed on the infusion label. BD staff only assess how the infusion has been programmed on the infusion pump.
  • Audit questions are specific to Western Health’s requests and context and strictly confidential to Western Health only.
  • All the medication safety representatives of BD are registered with Ahpra and will be wearing their BD identification along with the Western Health visitor sticker.

How is data collected, stored and shared?

  • Electronic data collection tool will be used and the raw data is subsequently analysed by BD. Raw data is provided to Western Health.
  • A PowerPoint presentation of all findings and recommendations including Q&A during the session will be provided by BD staff to relevant Western Health stakeholders. A copy of the presentation will be provided to Western Health and not shared with anyone outside of BD.
