Welcome to your latest Transition News

Hello and welcome to your latest Transition News.

It is surreal to think the festive period is fast approaching. It feels like only yesterday we were celebrating the first 6 months post amalgamation, and yet we have almost reached 18 months working together as ‘One Western Health’.

I hope the recently implemented operations reporting structure for many of the Bacchus Marsh and Melton services has gone smoothly, and that for the most part the day to day impact has been minimal. Phase 2 will see the transition of the remaining clinical, ambulatory and community services as well as any outstanding non-clinical services. As always, we will keep you informed and involved as this work progresses.

Our Digital Technology Services (DTS) and Digital Health teams continue to progress with the mammoth task of integrating functionality for all users.  This month sees us achieve a significant upgrade of our Wi-Fi, facilitating a clinical grade network across sites. The teams are busy building the remote access platform and the next big milestone from here is planned for March where all users will be integrated onto the Western Health network. Rest assured, all relevant applications will still be accessible for staff.  Whilst it is still some time away, the end goal of a shared Electronic Medical Record edges closer and closer.

I would also like to thank Sharon Read and the Community Engagement Transition Committee who have met for the past 12 months, providing feedback on the community impact of the amalgamation. The committee provided advice that resulted in the production of the community newsletter, communication with the community during Covid, and direction on commissioning some artwork for both Bacchus Marsh and Melton.

This committee of consumers, CEO Kirup and representatives from the Melton and Moorabool Councils will cease meeting. A community advisory committee will be established for Melton community health services and a position established for a Melton/Bacchus Marsh representative on the Western Health Community Advisory Committee. This has been a great piece of work with community and I extend my thanks to all members who volunteered their time and commitment so willingly to this group.

I am proud of the ongoing benefits we continue to operationalise through this amalgamation process and I am incredibly grateful for the collective efforts and engagement of our staff.

Kind Regards,

Russell Harrison
Chief Executive

BOB (BEING OUR BEST) UPDATE

The BOB program is continuing to be implemented with the following modules have been rolled out as part of the culture work that is part of the transition.

Module 1: Culture Conversations
Team Workshops

From April to June, over 50 BMM leaders were trained to facilitate workshops on building values-centred culture with their teams.

To date, over 13 departments/work areas from nursing and community programs have conducted at least one workshop. It is expected that more teams will complete the culture conversation activity before the end of the year.

Module 2: Coaching Conversations

The Coaching Conversations module commenced in June and focusses on equipping leaders with coaching skills and approaches through an accredited program and facilitated by an accredited coach.

The module is due to finish in mid-December. So far over 35 managers completed the course and 60 managers have completed some aspect of the program.

Module 3: Accountability Conversations

The third instalment of the BOB program has recently been completed.  Incorporating a mix of knowledge and skills-based learning, the aim of this module is to support and equip leaders to be confident in having accountability conversations with staff and embed these conversations as part of a values-centred culture.  The module builds on the Culture Conversations and Coaching modules and comprises of 2 x 2-hour workshops.

The module will be repeated in early December.  Staff in leadership/supervisory positions, please register your interest with Khanh Do, our Organisational Development consultant on Khanh.Do@wh.org.au / 0434 936 888.

LAUNCH OF CULTURE COMMUNITY HUB & MURAL AT MELTON COMMUNITY SERVICES BUILDING

A fantastic project led by Sharon Read and Gillian Thatcher was recently completed in the cultural space for the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community where a space is provided for community and their families to meet and wait for appointments or to meet staff.

An acknowledgement and signing of the mural designed and completed by Aunty Jean, a Wilcannia woman from Bakandji river people took place on Thursday 29th September which gave an opportunity for staff and invited guests to hear the planning and story of the mural followed by morning tea.

The new community hub has been decorated by the elders group and is a welcoming informal space.

Thanks to Gillian, Mel Baker and Jenny Copes for arranging the event and leading the work with completing the project.

What's Next?

ART WORK

As part of the amalgamation the community transition committee and BOB staff advisory group have decided that a table and benches would be something useful and a creative way to acknowledge the previous patients, community and staff of the former DjHS.

We are looking for a local woodwork artist to make two tables and benches using local hardwood and incorporating some of the wood panels from the Hospital.

If you know of anyone who might be interested please email: Sharon.Read@wh.org.au
