We have achieved another exciting milestone in the Sunshine Hospital Expansion of Pharmacy (SHEP) project. As of Friday 2nd June 2023, Lendlease handed over SHEP to Western Health as the project has now reached its practical completion. This means all major construction work has ended, with minor works taking place over the next few weeks.

This project came about due to the current Pharmacy reaching its capacity with the recent growth in points of care at the Sunshine Hospital. The Sunshine Hospital Pharmacy footprint will be expanded from 350m² to 800m² to support all clinical operations.

This expansion of Pharmacy services accommodates for growth in staff numbers, the installation of pharmacy Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADC’s) to automate many routine tasks, efficient storage of extensive stock holdings and the introduction of onsite medication manufacturing in an Aseptic Suite.

The Sunshine Hospital Expansion of Pharmacy (SHEP) will:

  • Be fully operational in November 2023
  • Have Pharmacy Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs). This will change the way medications are handled and result in improved efficiencies and more accurate medication supply that translates to improved medication safety and provision of best possible care to patients.
  • Offer an expanded Clinical Trials Pharmacy service
  • Offer OHS improvements
  • Support future onsite non-cytotoxic compounding activities.

The SHEP project team is pleased with the progress of the project. The resilience, understanding, patience and extraordinary teamwork of every individual pharmacy staff has been the major factor in the success of the project. Well done Pharmacy Team!
