As many of you will now be aware, Western Health’s very own Dr Meron Pitcher was recognised in yesterday’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. She was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to medicine and to women’s health.

This is a richly deserved accolade.

Now the Director of Surgery at Western Health, Meron is both a General and Breast Surgeon. Meron began her outstanding career as a graduate of the University of Melbourne’s medical school. She completed her surgical training in Britain before accepting a position at Footscray Hospital in 1993 – and has dedicated herself to Western Health patients and communities ever since.

Meron’s achievements over almost three decades of service to Western Health are too many to detail here, but the establishment of the breast cancer clinic at Sunshine Hospital in 1994 is an obvious highlight. Meron has been a true pioneer of breast cancer care across Melbourne’s western suburbs, saving and improving the lives of countless patients. Renowned for her compassion, intelligence and dedication, Meron is – and has been for many years – a much-admired mentor for surgical teams across Western Health, and beyond.

Please join me in congratulating Meron for her inclusion in the prestigious Queen’s Birthday Honours List. This recognition is thoroughly deserved. Even more importantly, let’s thank Meron for her extraordinary contribution to Western Health. The lives of so many have counted on it.
