The Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing and Midwifery (RUSON/M) works as part of the health care team, assisting Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives to provide delegated aspects of patient care. Elements of direct and indirect care will be delegated in accordance with the professional judgment of the supervising registered nurse or midwife and in accordance with the level of achieved educational preparation and assessed competence of the individual RUSON/M.

RUSON/Ms are enrolled at a university to undertake undergraduate nursing and/or midwifery studies, registered with AHPRA as a student, and who at commencement of their employment have successfully completed at least twelve months of the Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery Degree.

RUSON/Ms undertake activities that have been delegated and supervised by a registered nurse/midwife in accordance with the NMBA Standards for practice and Delegation and Supervision Framework for Nursing and Midwifery.

Registered nurses/midwives can only delegate aspects of care to a RUSON/M which are consistent with the educational preparation, skill level and assessed competencies of the RUSON/M. RUSON/Ms are not to be given sole allocation of patients/women.

Our RUSON/Ms are highly valued, important members of the Western Health team, that support the provision of Best Care to our patients and women. They are supported by the clinical expertise of the registered nurses/midwives, educators, colleagues, mentors, and a structured program.
