In 2018, the Victorian Government committed $675 million towards the establishment of ten Community Hospitals (CH) across regional Victoria and greater Melbourne, providing increased access to health services in major growth areas. The project will upgrade or expand existing services at ten sites. Funding to progress the design and construction for the CH program was achieved in May 2021.

Western Health will be the governing agency for two sites as part of this program. Sunbury CH will be an expansion of the existing Sunbury Day Hospital. Point Cook CH will be a new development, located at 140 Dunnings Road Point Cook, within the Point Cook Town Centre.

    • Better Care – expanding access to primary, community and day hospital services to people closer to home.
    • Better integration of health, wellbeing and social services for those who need a comprehensive service response.
    • More capacity – providing low acuity care to free up larger hospitals to deal with more complex cases and reduce unnecessary presentations and wait times in emergency departments.
    • Better access – targeted investment and planning for extended hours provides the right care when and where families need it.
  • Sunbury Community Hospital

    The existing Sunbury Day Hospital will be upgraded to become the Sunbury Community Hospital. The capital development will include:

    • Refurbished Pharmacy, Day Medical and Dialysis points of care
    • Upgraded Medical Imaging Services including CT
    • New Urgent Care Centre

    Currently a new staff car park has been constructed at the rear of the hospital and the Main Works package will kick off in September. Intrec Management have been appointed as the successful contractor and will work closely with Western Health, the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) and the local community to ensure a successful delivery of the program.
