Maternity CARES Plan

At Western Health unfortunately our rate of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and severe perineal trauma has been higher than what we’d like in the past.

There is increasing evidence of the psychological effects of PPH including impacts on breastfeeding, bonding, and contact time between the parents and baby. Health professionals can also be impacted by a fear of managing future PPH cases.

Western Health has developed our Maternity CARES Improvement Plan, and is also participating in Safer care Victoria’s Collaborative series for both PPH and Severe Perineal Trauma, with the aim of reducing harm to families and health professionals by standardising and improving the response to PPH and severe perineal trauma.

Aim:

Support the implementation of the Maternity CARES Plan, with a focus on sustainably decreasing incidence of PPH and severe perineal trauma.
