It’s World Breastfeeding Week!

Our Lactation Services Team (pictured) at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital (JKWC) go above and beyond to support our staff to help women to feed their babies.

This year’s theme is ‘Enabling Breastfeeding- Making a difference for working parents.’

We have a refurbished lactation room to support staff breastfeeding their babies and we working towards achieving accreditation as a Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace (BFW).

Staff are enhancing their lactation knowledge at a Western Health Breastfeeding Study Day on Friday 4 August 2023, thanks to the support of a grant from Greater Western Water.

We have also been recognised for providing gold-standard breastfeeding and lactation care to our women:

  • We maintain the prestigious accreditation for the World Health Organisation’s Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI), which recognises our commitment to protect, promote and support mothers to breastfeed.
  • Women who have a baby who requires support in our Newborn Services can now hire a hospital-grade breast milk pump for a low-cost.
  • Our Lactation Service runs seven days a week to ensure all patients benefit from their expertise.
  • This year we were the only Victorian hospital to receive the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC®) Care Award.
