In the early hours of Monday 6 February, a staff member’s vehicle in the multi-deck car park at Sunshine Hospital was broken into, with valuable items stolen. Attempts were made to break into a number of other vehicles.

Our staff and volunteers provide exceptional care across our sites every day and it is disappointing that healthcare workers have been impacted in this instance.

This matter was reported to Victoria Police on Monday morning and is currently under investigation with support from Western Health.

Staff safety and wellbeing is always our priority. We continue to implement a number of strategies for the protection of our staff and volunteers including:

  • Lifts to Level 1 of the multi-deck are now swipe-only at all times, in line with access to the other levels of the car park.
  • Additional signage advising of CCTV monitoring in and around the car park installed as a deterrent.
  • Signage will be installed to remind car park users not to leave valuables in vehicles.
  • Increase frequency of patrols.

We can appreciate this incident may cause concern to staff. A reminder that an established car parking security patrol service operates each evening with external company Stateguard Security Services and we encourage staff to request an escort to their vehicles on site.

At Sunshine, you can do this by calling Stateguard on 0452 432 698 between the hours of 6pm-12am. At other times, staff can request an escort by Western Health security guards by calling the Sunshine Security Office on 0432 758 929. Details for other sites are available on the intranet.

If you have been affected by this incident and have any ongoing concerns, please speak with your manager.

As always, we are committed to hearing your feedback and ideas – please email WH-Carpark@wh.org.au
