Staff are invited to hear the results of a landmark study led by La Trobe University, which assessed the effectiveness of our Galinjera Maternity program, which offers First Nations families culturally-responsive continuity of midwifery care.

Date: Wednesday 1 June, 2022

Time: 12pm

Where: Zoom only ( details below)

Topic: Translating evidence into practice: Implementing culturally safe continuity of midwifery care for First Nations women in three maternity services in Victoria, Australia

Outline: Strategies to improve outcomes for Australian First Nations mothers and babies are urgently needed. Caseload midwifery, where women have midwife-led continuity throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the early postnatal period, is associated with substantially better perinatal health outcomes, but few First Nations women receive it.

This presentation will present the findings of a recently completed National Health and Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) partnership project that aimed to address this gap by exploring the capacity of maternity services in Victoria, Australia, to implement, embed, and sustain a culturally responsive caseload midwifery service. It will discuss implementation and outcomes of the: Galinjera program (Joan Kirner Women and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital), Nangnak Buban Murrup (Mercy Hospital), and Baggarrook (at the Royal Women’s Hospital).

This presentation is part of the Western Health and University of Melbourne Medical Grand Round, which are a great opportunity to share innovation and knowledge between our different specialist teams.

Presenter: Professor Helen McLachlan and Ms Res McCalman

Please note: this is a Zoom-only event.
