Dear Colleagues

The Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Health Care was established as a tribute to Ken Schwartz, a healthcare lawyer who died at the age of 40. In 1994 Ken was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, he was 40, a non-smoker, ate well and exercised regularly.

During his 10-month ordeal, Ken came to realize that what matters most during an illness is the human connection between patients and their caregivers. He wrote movingly about his experience in an article for the Boston Globe Magazine titled “A Patient’s Story”. In it, he reminds caregivers to stay in the moment with patients and how “the smallest acts of kindness” make “the unbearable bearable.”

While we grapple with the biggest change to healthcare across the globe that any of us will see, it is timely to remember that we may not be able to change the big issues but we can still make the lives of our patients better by being in the moment and carrying out small acts of kindness.

The Schwartz Centre also has some recommendations for how to change our thinking from negative to positive. I have found them helpful, and I hope you will too.

Last month I made the classic error of wishing good luck to some trainees undertaking exams. The error being that I mentioned some but not all. So, this month I wish all those still to take exams good luck. Congratulations to all who passed their exams. And to those who did not I hope that you understand this is a speed bump, not a dead end. Many of my friends failed exams, two of them six times. They left the UK, went to Ireland and took them again and passed. They went on to be great paediatricians, and now no-one cares how many attempts they had at the exam.

Roll on September with warmer days, school holidays and leaving winter behind!

  • Medical Workforce Unit (MWU) Update

There is a flurry of activity in MWU as we are in 2023 recruitment overdrive.

I am delighted that many of our JMS are staying on next year, so thank you to our junior doctors who have returned signed contracts to date.

Our team is working hard to get Term 4 rosters out early, alongside some improvements works in Roster On to make your shifts and payroll more streamlined.

There are numerous Specialty College exams between July – September including RANZCR, RANZCOG, RCPA, ACEM, CICM, ACRRM, RANZCP, CICM & RACS to name a few amongst many others.

Good luck to all trainees going through this stressful part of your training!

For those of you who have completed exams, well done for taking that first step to progressing your career, I hope you have all had some time to celebrate and debrief with your peers. To the trainees sitting exams in the upcoming weeks -stay focused, balancing work and studies is incredibly challenging, but you will soon be able to enjoy time with your friends and family once again.

I would like to acknowledge and thank our SMS, your Supervisors and volunteer College Examiners who have given up their time to coach and mentor you over several months. It is humbling to see the sacrifices of our SMS as they all give up their time so readily each year, to help our trainees get through this hurdle in life.

Whilst I join with everyone in applauding and congratulating our candidates who have been successful this year in their respective College exams, to anyone who has to face the daunting task of resitting, do not lose hope. Each of you are determined, bright and talented individuals and the Art of Medicine is not defined by immediate exam success. You are all the future of medicine here at Western Health, and with time you will get through your training. We are here to support you on that journey.

Finally, the inaugural Western Doctors Leadership Council will be taking place on 7th October as a forum for all Head of Units to meet and put our collective brains together as we face unprecedented challenges in healthcare but also see many opportunities on the horizon for Western Health as it continues to expand and grow. I look forward to meeting and engaging with our Unit Heads as we face the future together.

    Best Wishes
    Abi

    Clinicians Health Channel (CHC) Survey

The Clinicians Health Channel (CHC) is an online information portal that is currently funded by the Victorian Department of Health.

It provides Victorian public healthcare professionals access to high-quality Australian and international clinical decision-making tools and evidence-based publications and journals to support patient care.

You may access the CHC Portal directly through the website www.clinicians.vic.gov.au or access individual resources via your intranet or library service. Here is the resource list provided by the CHC.

We are evaluating the CHC and planning for the future. To do this, we invite all users to complete a short survey.

Here is the link to the CHC Survey, which is now active.

    WH PPGs on the Move

The PROMPT document management system currently used by Bacchus Marsh & Melton staff will soon be the new home for all Western Health Policies, Procedures and Guidelines (PPGs).

The PROMPT system was developed by Barwon Health and supports a significant number of health services with their PPG access and management requirements. The PROMPT platform has a well-developed search function which should make it easier for staff to find and utilise PPGs.

The PPGs currently on the WH Intranet are currently being copied and moved across to the WH PROMPT site. We are aiming for the first week in October 2022 for all WH PPGs to be on the PROMPT site. To ensure staff do not need to work across two PPG systems, WH-wide staff access to the PROMPT system will not commence until all PPGs have been moved across. In the interim, the content of the WH PPG intranet site is still being kept up-to-date, even if documents have already been copied to PROMPT.

Training materials on the centralised PROMPT system are currently under development, noting the PROMPT system is very user friendly. We have also taken the opportunity to integrate WH and Bacchus Marsh/Melton PPG templates and submission forms, so these will look a little different for new and reviewed PPGs from October.

Look out for further information on the movement of WH PPGs which will be regularly distributed in the lead up to a go-live for the WH PROMPT system in October. Information will also be accessible through the WH Live Best Care site.
