The expansion of Western Health has provided the opportunity to develop a strategic approach to introduce Automated Dispensing Solutions (ADS) to achieve closed loop medication administration.
Aim:
The aim of introducing an Automated Dispensing Solution, is to achieve the following benefits:
- Improved patient safety outcomes, with reduced medication administration errors due to ADS design/features, integration with WH systems as well as through point of care barcode scanning to verify the right patient, right medication, right route, right dose, right time.
- Efficiency gains in patient care areas, reduced time to access medicines and therefore facilitate timely administration of medications; reduced controlled drug count efforts.
- Improved inventory control: operational efficiencies, enhanced visibility of medication stock and usage. When interfaced with pharmacy system (Merlin) can automate the restocking process and to track drug distribution.
- Saves time and increase operation efficiency for both nursing and pharmacy staff releasing time to patient care.
- Improved accountability and security of medication handling, reducing misappropriation risk
- Extensive reporting and reduced incident investigation time
- Integrated electronic management of medications and positive staff experience of integrated digital health systems
- Reduced space profile for storage of medicines.
