On Thursday 10th October 2024 as part of Western Health’s Research Week, the Nursing & Midwifery session was held in front of a large in-person and on-line audience to celebrate nurse-led and midwife-led research.

Our keynote speaker for the session was Professor Rochelle Wynne, our Chair in Nursing – Western Health Deakin University Partnership who gave an interesting overview of her journey to where she is today titled #WestIsBest.

It was fantastic to hear presentations from 7 of our nurses/midwives who have been undertaking research over the past 12 months – the work they are doing is amazing and will certainly have a positive impact on sustainable healthcare for the future.

  • Hannah Sharrock (Professional Practice Development & Improvement Manager, Nursing & Midwifery Workforce Unit) – Using Pulse Check Data to Improve Work Experiences of Supplementary Staff
  • Mahar Balushi (Registered Nurse) – Psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Nurses and Midwives: findings from sequential, cross-sectional surveys.
  • Kylie Feely (Equipment Nurse, Sunshine Hospital ICU) – Reusable linen for sustainable waste reduction in the Intensive Care Unit: a prospective mixed-methods study.
  • Nicole Davies (Director of Nursing & Midwifery – EMICS + Access & Patient Flow) – Transition to Mental Health Nursing Program in the Emergency Department: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.
  • Wendy Giddings (Director of Nursing & Midwifery – Western Health at Home + Integrated Community Health Services) – Patient views of nurses’ communication and interpersonal skills during acute hospitalisation: a descriptive cross-sectional study.
  • Anita Cherian (Credentialled Diabetes Educator/Clinical Nurse Consultant) – Barriers and enablers to effective uptake of preconception care among couples with pre-existing diabetes: A health care provider perspective using theoretical domains framework.
  • Lucy Gladwell (Maternity Services Development Lead) – Comparison of Childbirth Education Programs at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s on knowledge, satisfaction, and birth outcomes.

The podium prize for the best oral presentation was highly contended with an inability to separate the two highest scored presenters. I am delighted to congratulate Kylie Feely and Lucy Gladwell as dual winners of this years Nursing & Midwifery Research Week Best Oral Presentation.

Kylie will receive $750 Western Health Foundation podium prize for her presentation for “Reusable linen for sustainable waste reduction in the Intensive Care Unit: a prospective mixed-methods study”

Lucy will receive $750 Western Health Foundation podium prize for her presentation for “Comparison of Childbirth Education Programs at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s on knowledge, satisfaction, and birth outcomes”
