At Western Health we endeavour to ensure accessible, respectful and safe care and services for people from all cultures, identities and abilities.

We also strive to be an inclusive workplace that attracts and retains talented and compassionate people.

That’s why this Friday we are celebrating International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), which falls on Saturday December 3.

IDPwD aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

To mark the occasion, you are invited to a Western Health IDPwD webinar with Paralympian wheelchair rugby star and motivational speaker Josh Hose and author, stroke survivor and acclaimed inspirational speaker Emma Gee.

There will also be stalls across all our campuses on Friday with the Disability Liaison Team on hand to share information about their service.

Introduced in 2020 as an emergency response to COVID-19, the service provides support for people with a disability, their families and carers to access services across Western Health and other health and human services, as required.

You can find out more about how Disability Liaison team work with people with disability and their health care teams on the staff intranet or the Westerly.

Alex Potter, who was appointed Operations Manager for Diversity and Inclusion at Western Health in June, is also spearheading actions to ensure we have an inclusive person-centred approach, regardless of background, identity and role.

In the New Year we will be finalising our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Framework; which will drive Western Health’s initiatives to embrace cultural diversity, LGBTI+, gender and sexuality, and disability inclusion for patients, carers and staff.

These are just some of the measures that we are taking to ensure that all patients receive the Best Care to suit their individual needs.
