Today we’re launching a new project called Faces of Footscray.

An incredible amount of work is going into the design and construction of our new Footscray Hospital. When it opens in 2025, it’s going to be a brilliant facility for our communities across the west, as well as a fantastic place for Western Health staff to work.

As exciting as it will be to move into our new $1.5 billion hospital, we all know that health services are about much more than a building. It’s the staff and volunteers that make hospitals tick. That’s why we’re introducing Faces of Footscray. It celebrates the fact that people make the existing Footscray Hospital so special.

Faces of Footscray is a series of staff and volunteer stories, which can be found in a new, dedicated section of the new Footscray Hospital microsite. Today I am delighted to share the first profiles with you. We will be regularly adding to Faces of Footscray over the next three years, as we work towards the big move. Some stories will also be posted on Western Health’s social media accounts.

We know we work with so many talented, dedicated and compassionate people across all Western Health sites. As much as we’d like to feature everyone, the aim of Faces of Footscray is to tell the stories of some of the many individuals with close connections to the existing Footscray Hospital – and highlight the great work being done across all our teams and departments in the process.

While I’m very proud to be launching Faces of Footscray today, I do so with mixed emotions. As many of you know, we recently lost much-loved ICU colleagues, close friends Filomena Anania and Josephine Gauci, to cancer. Filomena was interviewed for Faces of Footscray during one of her final shifts as a nurse. In honouring Filomena’s wish to be part of this project, we also wanted to acknowledge Josephine’s dedication as a patient services assistant. Their story has been included in Faces of Footscray with the blessing of their families, and can be found here.

I would encourage you to take some time to read the remarkable stories on Faces of Footscray as it is, and always will be, the staff that make the provision of best care possible. If you have any suggestions about staff and volunteers you would like to see featured, please email whpublicaffairs@wh.org.au. (More information about Footscray Hospital’s proud history can also be found on The People’s Hospital website).
