Dear colleagues,

The Victorian Government has now begun the process of searching for a consortium to deliver the $900 million new Melton Hospital.

The Department of Health has released an Invitation for Expressions of Interest, commencing the process to secure a partner for the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the fully electric hospital in Cobblebank. The new hospital will be delivered as a Public Private Partnership, the same model used to build the new Footscray Hospital currently under construction.

The invitation seeks responses from suitably qualified and experienced consortia who have the vision and capabilty to deliver this landmark project for Melbourne’s outer west.

This next phase of the procurement process follows an industry briefing in October last year, where more than 350 infrastructure experts were encouraged to put their best foot forward to deliver the new Melton Hospital in the most innovative and cost-effective way.

Later this year shortlisted consortia will be invited to prepare detailed proposals to deliver the new hospital, before a preferred consortium is appointed and construction gets underway next year.

The new Melton Hospital will provide a 24-hour emergency department, an intensive care unit, and services including general medical/surgical, maternity and neonatal, mental health, radiology and outpatient care. It will have capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and see almost 60,000 patients in the emergency department.

Set to open in 2029, the new hospital will support the growing communities in Melbourne’s outer west – ensuring locals get the care they need, close to home. It will provide an essential link with services at the public hospitals in the western region – including Sunshine Hospital and the $1.5 billion new Footscray Hospital.

The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with Western Health, who will operate the hospital. Construction is expected to get underway in 2024 and be finished in 2029.
